Reluctantly Accepting The Media Moment We're In

Image
I hate this .  I hate Skydance. I'm sick of talking about this deal, and now that's nearly finalized, it's no longer a deal. It's a reality.  Been talking about the Five Stages of Grief for a while, and I've noticed people are still in various stages of it. Denial. Anger. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance. As for me? I'm in the Acceptance stage. Acceptance is not "surrender" or giving up. I'm a realist, and given ALL the avenues and obstacles that has been part of that journey, the reality is that the two companies are now one. I've accepted that reality. That doesn't mean I have to like it because as I've said many, many, many times, I hate it. I hate that this deal killed Warner Bros as a stand-alone media company. I hate that most of the people who made Warner Bros worthwhile are either gone or leaving when the dust settles.  I hate that the movie theater chain owners, you know, all three of them, wanted this deal to happen so bad...

Don't Panic

You people made me break my hiatus for this one post. I explicitly stated that I did not want to talk about the deal anymore. I'm not entirely talking about it, but there is something that has been grating at me the moment the deal was officially determined.  Look, I get it. You hate this deal. I really hate this deal. Folks who work at Warner Bros Discovery hate this deal. Even some of the stockholders and board members hate this deal. It's a terrible deal. It's not even sealed. It's not completed. And there's still a chance it might not legally get cleared by most trade commissions and jurisdictions and completely fall apart. But please hear me out for just a moment.  I want you folks, especially you animation fans, take the time to actually read this because a huge chunk of you folks is acting like petulant children. Since I have to be the grown-up in the room, I'm going to have to say this. Paramount Skydance is NOT going to just get rid of Warner Bros prog...

Building A Better Media Conglomerate

Image
Want to play a little game?  Back in the day when I was working full-time on TXB, I created a series of articles called "Imagine If." Essentially, reimagined scenarios of media companies doing things they likely could have done in the past but decided against it.  Saban buying Funimation. Warner Communications keeping Nickelodeon. Ted Turner actually buying CBS. The USA Cartoon Express lasting beyond 1998.  Things like that.  This is no different.  I was given a challenge by reader and fellow AU scenario writer Chandler Ritter-Roberts over at Bluesky . The challenge?   Building a media company that could become a massive modern media conglomerate.  #BuildYourAltConglomerate, as his hashtag goes.  I could create a company as big as I want to counter what two of the biggest media companies, Warner Bros Discovery and The Walt Disney Company, could do and create a realistic media empire.  The one caveat in this game? While every media compan...
